Gateways Music Festival | BLACKSOUND: A Paul J. Burgett Lecture and Community Conversation with Matthew D. Morrison

BLACKSOUND explores how Black musical artistry has shaped the sound of America—from classical music and jazz all the way to blues, country, and popular music. Led by award-winning musicologist, author, and Stanford professor Dr. Matthew D. Morrison, the conversation begins with Black artistry in classical music and moves across Western musical traditions to examine race, authorship, cultural ownership, influence, and the American musical canon—while highlighting the continuing innovation of Black artists across generations.
